On April 24, 2013 at 6:42 a.m., Crawford County Sheriff’s Deputies were dispatched to K 126 Highway and 200 Street regarding subjects firing guns from a moving vehicle driving eastbound. The vehicle in question was located and stopped by Pittsburg Police in the 500 block of E. 4th Street in Pittsburg.
There were five occupants in the vehicle, two of which were taken into custody by Sheriff’s Deputies on various charges. Two shotguns were collected from the vehicle.

Arrestees and charges:

Brian T. Hiatt, 28, Pittsburg, KS – Transporting an open container Bond- $500

Adam M. Kunshek, 25, Pittsburg, KS – Unlawful Discharge of a Firearm; Transporting an open container Bond- $1,000

Hiatt, the driver of the vehicle, was tested for suspicion of Driving Under the Influence by Pittsburg Police.

It is believed that suspects shot at road signs in Cherokee County but no damage has been reported in Crawford County. Anyone that finds gunshot damage to their property located along the right of way is encouraged to contact the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office or their local law enforcement.

This incident is remains under investigation.

Injury Accident April 4, 2013

On April 4 at 4:25 p.m., Crawford County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to an injury accident on K-126 Hwy, just west of US 69 Hwy.

A 2012 Chevrolet Cruze, driven by Melanie Puffinbarger of Franklin, KS was westbound on K- 126 Highway from US 69 Highway when the vehicle was observed swerving from shoulder to shoulder before veering off the roadway striking a sign post and then continuing down the embankment, colliding with a utility pole.  The driver was transported to Via Christi for unknown injuries.  The collision is still under investigation by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office.

Stolen Livestock Investigation

On February 9, 2013 Crawford County Sheriff’s Office received a report of 8- 400 to 500 pound calves stolen in rural NE Crawford County.  On April 2, investigators developed a suspect in the theft.

James Vilmer, 21 of Arcadia, KS  was questioned about the theft.  As a result of the investigation, reports will be provided to the Crawford County Attorney’s Office to formally charge Vilmer with the theft and sale of the calves on February 2, 2013.

During the investigation, it was learned that Vilmer was responsible for several other thefts from the same victim over the course of a 3 month period.  Investigators were able to recover an ATV that was stolen in one of those thefts.

The investigation is continuing.

Incident 03-30-2013

RE: Passenger falls from vehicle

On 03/30/2013 at approximately 0158 hours, Crawford County Sheriff’s Deputies responded to a report of a woman that had jumped out of a moving vehicle, approximately .3 mile N of 580th AVE, on K7 HWY, in Crawford County KS.
33-year old Jennifer Nicole Howell, of 505 N Summit, Girard KS, was the passenger of a 2003 Dodge PU, that was driven by Andrew Jason Howell, also of 505 N Summit, Girard KS, when she allegedly jumped from the vehicle that was traveling at highway speeds. Statements indicate Howell jumped from the northbound vehicle and ended up in the east ditch.
Howell received significant trauma and was transported to Freeman Hospital in Joplin MO, and then later transported to Mercy Hospital in Springfield MO, by Eagle Med.
The Crawford County Fire District #4, Girard Fire Department, and the Crawford County EMS assisted at the scene. The circumstances of this incident are under investigation by the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office.

 

 

Hay Fire Arson

On 03/22/2013 at 0355 hours units from the Crawford County Sheriff’s Office and the Brazilton Fire
Dept responded to the report of several hay bales on fire at the intersection of 590th Ave. and 80th St.
The property owner, John Yoger of Girard arrived on scene to assist the fire department in separating
the burning bales from the undamaged ones. The fire was suspicous in nature and is being investigated
as an arson.
